Learning to meditate is easier with a guide. There are video-based and book-style guides that you can follow, depending on your preferences. Regardless of which type of meditation guide you choose to follow, however, there are a few tips you can employ along the way for improved success and enjoyment.

Don’t Worry If You’re Not in the Right Headspace

A big part of learning to meditate is learning to make it a priority and a part of your daily routine. Often, those who are new to meditation will put it off until they feel they're "in the right headspace" or "in the right mood." But actually, when you're not in a great headspace, that can be the best time to meditate. So, at least when you're just starting out, it is best to dedicate yourself to meditate at a certain time of day, every day, regardless of how you actually feel when that moment comes.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

If you're uncomfortable in your clothing, you may find that it distracts you as you try to focus on developing your meditation techniques. When you're more experienced, you might be able to shrug this off, but as a beginner, it is helpful to get rid of any distractions that may impede you from following along with your meditation guide. So, change into comfortable clothing before you begin each session.

Don’t Push Thoughts Away

One of the hardest parts of learning how to meditate via any method or modality is grasping how to truly clear your mind. Many people attempt to do this by pushing their thoughts away. But a more effective way of clearing your mind is to think about your thoughts floating through your mind, and then floating off and away. The program you're following may have some more specific suggestions in this regard. Pay attention to them; they're one of the most important elements when you're learning.

Create a Meditation Space

Create a space in your home where you always meditate. It can be a whole room, or it can just be a little nook in your bedroom. Decorate it with items that make you feel relaxed and more like yourself. A comfortable chair, yoga mat, or even blanket on the floor is a nice touch, too.

Following a beginner's guide to meditation can be good way to learn. Adhering to the tips above as you do so will only enhance your results even further.
